National Competition for Professionals on Structural Steel Design & Construction 2007

 

Institute for Steel Development & Growth (INSDAG) have pleasure in inviting entries (one entry from one professional / organisation) for the National Structural Steel Design & Construction Award Competition for Professionals for best steel / Composite Bridge, buildings, Industrial Structures, best large covered Space Structures and best special structures. The objective is to appreciate the excellence in the field of steel design & construction in India, particularly demonstrating its potential in terms of efficiency, speed, lightness, aesthetics and cost .


OPERATION OF THE AWARDS

The Awards are open to steel based structures situated in India that have been built by Indian steel work contractors using steel predominantly sourced from India. They must have been completed and be ready for occupation or use during the calendar years from 2002 to 2006 otherwise entries are not eligible.

SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES

Any member of the design / execution team (firm / practising professional, single or in group) may submit an entry using the appropriate form. The declaration of compliance with the award requirements must be completed. Participants should ensure that Architect / Structural Engineer / Construction Agency / Client of the design / execution team have been informed and the entry should be sent to the address indicated below not later than 31st October 2007. The Notice of Intent for participation should be sent to INSDAG latest by 30th June 2007.

THE PANEL OF JUDGES

A panel of judges who are leading representatives of Architecture, Civil / Structural Engineering / Organisations will assess the entries.

The panel of judges will select award winners after assessing all entries against the following criteria:

A) Planning and Architectures

  • Architectural excellence & Innovations
  • Satisfaction of client’s brief, particularly cost effectiveness
  • Functional efficiency & adaptability to changed requirements during its functional life
  • Durability & Life Cycle Cost aspect
  • Efficiency in provision of services and installation systems
  • Favourable environmental impact
  • Conservation of Energy

B) Structural Engineering

  • Integration of structure and services to meet architectural requirements & Innovative ideas in structural system used
  • Benefits achieved by using steel / predominantly steel intensive construction
  • Efficiency of design, Innovative ideas in fabrication and erection

C) Special Meritorious features

THE AWARDS

The winning firms of consultants / turnkey construction agencies responsible for the design and construction will receive Award as follows:


First prize: Rs 2,00,000/-, a Scroll of Honour and Certificate
Second prize: Rs 1,25,000/-, a Scroll of Honour and Certificate
Third prize: Rs 75,000/-, a Scroll of Honour and Certificate


Entries from any party involved in a project but are no longer in business for whatever reason will not be entertained in the Competition. Entries already submitted in the competition for the year 2004, 2005 & 2006 are not entitled for resubmission.

All drawings, photographs, design information and description matter submitted with the entry forms shall become the property of INSDAG who assumes the right to publish the material in any form they may wish. Prior to submission of the entry, the consultant / turnkey construction agency must therefore obtain permission, if required, from the client / concerned firm.

GENERAL

The project for which entry is submitted must have a minimum cost of Rs. 3.0 crores. The structures covered in the entry must be made available for inspection by the judges if they so desire. All entrants will be bound by the decision of the judges, whose discretion to make or withhold any award or awards is final. No discussion or correspondence regarding their decision will be entertained by the judges or by INSDAG. The decision of INSDAG in all matters relating to the Competition is final and binding.

The results of the Competition will be announced in May 2008, but all winning entrants will be informed of the results before they are made public. It is essential, however, that any publicity that entrants might wish to arrange should be withheld until completion of the presentation ceremony.

Conditions:

The application form is to be completed in block capital or typewritten and sent to “Director General, INSDAG, Ispat Niketan, 52/1A Ballygunge Circular Road, Kolkata - 700019” not later than 31st October 2007.
1. All documents shall be submitted in one set of hard copy and in soft copies in CD.
2. A description of the outstanding features of the building / structure, the approach to its analysis & design, the use of steel and cost data should be included in the summary report (covered within 1000 words) highlighting all features in A, B & C. The need for the use of Steel and its cost effectiveness should be included.
3. Not more than ten unmounted drawings in A3 size [eg. plans, sections, elevations & structural details & perspectives (optional)] illustrating the essential features of significance in relation to the use of steel.
4. Not less than six different unmounted glossy original colour photographs (approximate size 8” x 10”).

Please ensure that all concerned parties have been informed of this Entry as indicated in the application form.
